“ASK ME WHY I’M A SOROPTIMIST” - read Rosalie Byrne Muir's presentation given at the National Association Meeting in Dublin November 2015. >>

At the third anniversary of his wife Jill’s murder in Australia, campaigner Tom Meagher addressed a workshop at the d hotel,   Drogheda on Saturday, 25th September 2015 to raise awareness and support for the White Ribbon Campaign to stop violence by men against women.

Chaired by Margaret Geraghty, National President of Soroptimist Ireland, the workshop investigated the causes and effects of men’s violence against women and was addressed also by Jenny Vince, SIGBI President and Ann Garvie, Past International President of the organisation, who described the educational projects and advocacy conducted throughout the world by Soroptimist Clubs to intervene in the cycle of violence which not only damages individual women, but also society as a whole.

Over a hundred delegates attended and at the end of the meeting made the White Ribbon Pledge.

Drogheda Soroptimists will be holding a number of awareness raising events for the White Ribbon Campaign in Louth between now and Christmas.

White Ribbon Campaign Seminar, Pillar Room, Rotunda Dublin 25th November, 2015

At the Seminar, held on the first of ‘fifteen days of action’ presentations were made by a broad spectrum of organisations united in their determination to eliminate violence by men against women.

The Minister for Justice, Ms Frances Fitzgerald, TD, in her address to the seminar, spoke about the importance of the impending legislation on sexual violence in addressing the problem of violence against women.

Margaret Geraghty and Karen Elliott spoke to the meeting, outlining the contribution so far by Soroptimists to the Campaign.

Ann Garvey

President Ann - we certainly can say you showed us what real courage is - you were never afraid to do or say what you believed to be right for our wonderful organisation - you made dreams come true - every happiness to you.
