Celebrating International Women’s Day in Ballinasloe this year we choose to hear stories from international women who had come to live in Ballinasloe.

Soroptimists and friends gathered in the Library Church Gallery to celebrate International Women’s Day 2020 on Friday 6th March.

In her opening address, the club’s President, Ms. Marie Connoly welcomed everybody. The club is 25 years old this year. To mark the occasion, we intend to plant oak trees in key areas to assist with reducing our carbon footprint.

The keynote speaker Ms Elizabeth Affoltier, from Blossom Harp, gave an entertaining presentation on her experiences of Irish rural life when she first arrived in Ireland from France. As a musician, the experience of negotiating contracts was challenging for a woman at that time. Great enjoyment was taken in stories of women going to ‘the snug’ in the pub and bevererages being brought out to women in the car when no snug was available. The gathering of 40 shared their experinces of how the life of women has improved over the last few decades. Memories of decisions women had to take, when there was little support available, were discussed. Understanding the cruelty experienced  then and the healing that was made possible through perseverence was encouraging. Elizabeth also advised the gathering to take every opportunity to encourage younger women reach their full potential.  The quiet strenght of  mothers, aunts, sisters and daughters was shared and appreciated all over again.  The coming together of women to support other less fortunate women  in latter years has greatly enriched their lives.

How can we support young women now going into the future? Its important that the narrative moves from victimhood to championing what we value, which is  justice and peace.  While we are following government guidelines during the pandemic, we are noting the frontline workforce is predominately women. Many of our members are on the front line and others are cocooning. We will stay strong ,safe and positive

Ballinasloe fundraiser

Saturday 11 th October, 2014 was Country Fair Day here in ballinasloe. This is held annually on the second Saturday of the famous Ballinasloe Horse Fair. This year the Ballinasloe Club set up a stall in the main Square and sold second hand bags, scarves and jewellery.  All the proceeds will go to our local projects and charities.  We had collected the items from friends and relatives and all sold was pure profit. We were delighted to raise over 1300 euro for our efforts.  We had a wonderful day, thankfully the sun shone.
