MILDRED O’BRIEN, SI BRAY & DISTRICT

Mildred O’Brien is an exemplary candidate for the SI Centenary 100 4 100, having been a loyal and steadfast member of Soroptimist International in the Republic of Ireland for 38 years, in Dun Laoghaire and Bray.

Mildred was an outstanding National President from 1981/82, and her enduring legacy is the North/South Public Speaking Competition for Girls, set up in collaboration with Miss Marie Brownlee, President of SI Northern Ireland.

Tess Hogan SI Cork

TESS HOGAN, SI CORK

Tess Hogan joined the Cork Soroptimist International in 1985. Since then she has been the most loyal and committed member any club could have.

Tess has held many National Officer posts: Extension & Membership, Programme Action, Organisation & Development, National President 1995/96. It is in her service to others that Tess excels, she was involved in setting up Caring for Carers. This organisation was unique in Ireland as it was the first to recognise the work of carers and developed a Carers Charter.

Dr. PATRICIA McCAUL COLLINS, SI DROGHEDA

Dr Patricia (Paddy) McCaul Collins, (1917–1995) was born in Nuremore, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, Ireland. In 1941 she graduated as a medical doctor from University College Dublin with a 1st in surgery.

In August 1945, she joined the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, (UNRRA) as a medical officer in a Displaced Persons camp.

ANNE KAVANAGH, SI DUBLIN

Anne Kavanagh still celebrates the day in 1972 when she was invited to become a member of the Dublin Soroptimist Club.

In 1979 she was invited by the Soviet Women’s Committee to visit Russia and the Ukraine with two other Irish women.

They spoke about the role of women in Ireland and the Russians, in turn, shared what was happening in the USSR. One of the meetings was chaired by Valentina Nikolayeva Tereshkova, the first woman cosmonaut in space.

JUDITH IRONSIDE (Nee LONG) SI ENNIS & DISTRICT

As a dedicated and active Soroptimist, Judith was National Association President (1989-1990) and a long-serving member of Ennis & District Soroptimists (Club President 1979-1980 and 1999-2000).

Her work on the Board of Rural Resettlement West Clare helped to achieve major social and infrastructural improvements in the rural areas of Quilty and Spanish Point. Her most incredible gift of friendship and camaraderie inspired us and she will be remembered as one of our most valuable members.
