Each year the President of Killarney Soroptimists nominates her person of the year in recognition of their contribution to local communities. Claire Bowler was this year’s worthy recipient.

Claire has worked tirelessly behind the scenes for over twenty years to organise and finance well deserved respite breaks for Kerry Carers. She has done this in her own quiet and unassuming way. The award was presented to her at the annual conference for carers which was held in The Gleneagle Hotel Killarney. Congratulations Claire on your well deserved award.

The Ladies who Lunch Pancake for Good Causes

Under the stewardship of President Noeleen O’Sullivan, Killarney Soroptimists held their annual Pancake morning fundraiser at the Dromhall Hotel on February 17th. This is the 7th year of the event which is going from strength to strength. Local businesses and Soroptimist members generously donated gifts for spot prizes and an auction.

The ladies and some brave gentlemen of Killarney and beyond turned out in force to support the event which raised monies for two local charities:  Home from Home - an after school care facility for children with special needs and Kerry Carers Respite Breaks which helps finance well deserved breaks for Kerry Carers.

The auction was conducted with style and panache by Ciara Irwin Foley and everyone was generous in their bids.

Cheques were later presented to both charities.

Julie Leahy Killarney 1919 – 2014  by Frankie McMahon

“It was a privilege to have known Julie – the salt of the earth”

The recent death of Julie Leahy nee McElligott Killarney was mourned by a large assembly of relatives and friends. Born in 1919 she smiled her way through almost a century. She was very proud of her roots in Moyvane, North Kerry.

Her good humour, quiet disposition and unshakeable faith endeared her to all. She worked tirelessly with people being all inclusive, compassionate, non judgemental, dependable – a modern day Christian in deeds. She devoted her life to the service of others.

We the Soroptomists were honoured to have had her as a member for over 35 years. She was President of our Killarney Branch during 2000- 2001.

She was a member of St Vincent De Paul for many years. She was respected by workers and patrons where her calming presence, her sense of humour and attractive twinkle in her eyes made her a true friend.

It was a privilege to have known Julie – the salt of the earth. The world is worse off without her. It seems as if another era is now passed. Farewell our friend.

She is survived by her 3 loving daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her late husband Dr Tom Leahy and son Thomas predeceased her.

Ar d’heis De go bhfuil a hanam uasal.
