Soroptimist Mullingar and District Public Speaking Girls competition was held recently in the Bloomfield Hotel. Fourteen girls competed. Each of the girls selected a topic from the 7 provided and spoke on it for 6 minutes. The most popular topics were Human Rights, Environment and The Empowerment of Women. It was a very interesting and entertaining evening as each of the speeches from the girls was their own view on the topic giving their view of how these areas should be considered for the future. The interest that young people have in sustainability and caring for our environment was very evident from the arguments put forward by those who spoke on Environment – we are not owners, we are caretakers for Mother Earth.

Niamh O’Reilly and Fionnuala Maher, Loretto College Mullingar were selected to go forward to the Regional Competition. Emer O Brien, a native of Mullingar and part of the GP Vocational Training Scheme in the Regional Hospital Mullingar who was the national winner of this competition in 2006 was one of the adjudicators on the night.  Sarah McCormack, Soroptimist thanked the hard work and dedication of the teachers who prepared the girls for this competition together with their parents and families.

Inspirational speaker Dr. Rhona Mahony addressed members at our September 2016 National Association meeting in the Aisling Hotel, while the wonderful Teresa and Maebh from Mullingar Harp School entertained us.

Mullingar Soroptimists were delighted to host a visit from National President Noreen. As is very traditional in Mullingar the evening stated with an early bird in the Bloomfield House Hotel. President Noreen then joined the members for their monthly meeting. Noreen in her address to the club complimented the club on the great achievements to date particularly on leading out on the national project. Noreen also noted the great link between the Soroptimists and the late Joe Dolan – picking up from our web site the many fundraising events we have had with the Dolans.

Noreen then complimented the club on having Sarah as the National Vice President and reminded members that it will be a very exciting time for the club as it will be the first time for the club to have a national president and also that they will have the honour of hosting the 50th Anniversary of the North/South Conference. If that wasn’t enough it will also be the 25th anniversary of the clubs charter.

Noreen mingled with members over light refreshments before facing the inclement weather back to Castlebar. A lovely evening of friendship was had by all.

On Friday 17th February Soroptimist International Mullingar & District planted a Querquis Cerris tree in the Mullingar Town Park to mark their 20th Anniversary. At the unveiling of the plaque President Sarah McCormack said “It was in 1992 that the Soroptimsts planted this very same type of tree to mark their 1st Anniversary and World Environmental day”.

Sarah invited Rhona Kelly Founder President of Soroptimist Mullingar & District to join her to unveil the plaque and said “on this our 20th year we are following in the footsteps of those great Soroptimsts of 20 years ago and it is only fitting that we should continue this great tradition in planting another tree in the lovely setting of Mullingar Town Park”.

Sarah continued to say she was very conscious of the history that is being made here today linking the past 20 years, with the current year but also energising the Soroptimists to take on the next 20 years and more. Sarah thanked Howard Costello and Declan Leonard, Westmeath County Council for their assistance with this event.

The tree is located beside the pond in the town park.
