As President of Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland, I am proud to announce our collective participation in the Orange the World campaign, part of the United Nations 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This global initiative is a powerful reminder of the urgent need to combat the violence faced by women and girls across the world.
Gender-based violence remains one of the most pervasive of human rights violations, impacting individuals, families and communities at every level. Here in Ireland, the statistics are stark and deeply concerning. With 1 in 4 women experiencing domestic abuse and countless more facing other forms of violence, the message of this campaign is vital: we must unite to put an end to these injustices.
At Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland, our mission has always been to empower, advocate for, create awareness of, act and support women and girls in their pursuit of a life free from violence and discrimination. Through our projects that focus on education, support networks and community action, we work tirelessly to create safe spaces and opportunities for women to thrive. Our commitment is rooted in the belief that true societal progress can only be achieved when women are safe, respected, and empowered.
The Orange the World campaign amplifies this mission by calling on everyone —governments, communities, and individuals — to take action. It underscores the importance of solidarity, awareness and proactive engagement in eradicating violence against women and girls. This campaign is not only a call for awareness but a rallying cry for transformative change.
As we launch our involvement, I encourage everyone to participate actively. Whether it is through attending events, supporting local services, or simply spreading awareness, your voice adds to the collective force advocating for a safer, fairer world for women and girls. Together, we can help shine a light on these issues and move towards a future where every woman lives free from the threat of violence.
The theme for our 2024 campaign is:“Prevention First” Starting with Awareness and Ending with Action!
Let us stand in solidarity during these 16 days and beyond. Our actions today lay the foundation for a better tomorrow. Join us, support the cause, and be a part of creating change.
